Irssi
Irssi is the IRC client of smart and beautiful people. It is definitely one of my favorite pieces of software ever written. When combined with Bitlbee (IRC to other chat networks gateway), it can’t get any better. Everything about it is customizable: you have full control over the entire client from within various perl modules.
If you are an IRC user, I strongly recommend you look into using Irssi.
